Nutty Fudgekins - November 2006

Hutt River Province & Prince Leonard

In 1994 Someone was selling fake royal titles of the principality of Hutt River Province -- and right under Prince Leonard's nose too!

Now no doubt you're asking where the blazes Hutt River Province is and who is Prince Leonard

Australia has a bong problem

Australia's marijuana smokers have created an unexpected problem for the country's recycling efforts: home-made bongs thrown into domestic recycling bins are contaminating material that could otherwise be reused.

Just one bong, or water pipe, could stop hundreds or even thousands of PET plastic bottles from being recycled because a bong's PVC hose would contaminate the material, says environmental campaigner Planet Ark

The Circle of wagons

do you know what the circle of wagons is?

its when you put three bunks, like the circling up of the wagons in a wagon train, an old cowboy movie, and they have the sheets hanging down so you can't see what's going on inside the four bunks and inside the four bunks about two dozen boys just fucked the shit out of this little mormon kid

a Metaphorical tale

Admiral Byrd had just reached the pole, only hours ahead of the Three Stooges so I guess he won the argument, but I walked away with the turnips. The following morning, I resigned my commission in the Coast Guard. The next thing I heard, there was civil war in Spain.
So i hopped aboard diversity and set sail, singing as we did so sail...

Things i would change if i was a dictator

Now i'm not talking about serious social and political issues, well all know governments have nothing to do with that sort of thing.
The government is actually implemented in order to further the personal prejudices of its highest members and most generous monetary contributors (lobbyists)

The meaning of Liff

In Life* there are many hundereds of common experiences, feelings, situations and even objects which we all know and recognize, but for which no word exists. On the other hand, the world is littered with thousands of spare words which spend their time doing nothing but loafing about on signposts pointing at places. Our job, as we see it, is to get these words down off the signposts and into the mouths of babes and sucklings and so on, where they can start earning their keep in every day conversation and make a more positive contribution to society.
Douglas Adams, John Loyd, Malibu, 1982

The orble phenomenon

Does it strike anyone else as odd that time and time again the most popular posts are those discussing various sections of the orble blogging system?

Whether it be discussion of pay or techniques for generating more traffic the blogs about blogs are up there time and time again...which leads me to believe the majority of readers are in fact bloggers themselves looking for ways to increase traffic

What's going on..are we still evolving?

So in this current day and age when we're supposedly at the peak of human evolution and patting ourselves on the back i feel a little stagnant.

The propgress up until about the 60s made sense to most

A tribute to George Bush

"We're now saying, democracy must flourish. And as I recall from my history, it took us quite a while here in the United States, but nevertheless we are making progress."
—Bush, in a "Meet the Press" interview shown Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, discussing Iraq's transformation to democracy

Happiness

It was nearly 2,000 years ago that Jesus Christ said: “A man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” It is somewhat surprising then that it has taken until quite recently for economists to catch up. However, with recent publications from the Executive Director of the Australia Institute Clive Hamilton, Growth Fetish (Allen & Unwin, 2003) followed by his Affluenza (Allen & Unwin, 2005) and Lord Richard Layard’s, Happiness: Lessons from a new science (Penguin Press, 2005) it seems the point might be sinking in.

The point: wealth does not equal happiness

After neoconservatism

As we approach the third anniversary of the onset of the Iraq war, it seems very unlikely that history will judge either the intervention itself or the ideas animating it kindly. By invading Iraq, the Bush administration created a self-fulfilling prophecy: Iraq has now replaced Afghanistan as a magnet, a training ground and an operational base for jihadist terrorists, with plenty of American targets to shoot at. The United States still has a chance of creating a Shiite-dominated democratic Iraq, but the new government will be very weak for years to come; the resulting power vacuum will invite outside influence from all of Iraq's neighbors, including Iran. There are clear benefits to the Iraqi people from the removal of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, and perhaps some positive spillover effects in Lebanon and Syria. But it is very hard to see how these developments in themselves justify the blood and treasure that the United States has spent on the project to this point. Francais Fukuyama

Australian interest rates and honest John's politik

Now when Australia saw an ad a fair while back with some politician telling them he'd "keep interest rates at record lows" they believed him.
But there's a little snag in this scenario.
Today we live in a global economy, international trade and what not has altered the economic envoironment to the point that it's basically a pendulum swinging on it's own, such is the nature of a capitalist economy

Today we live in a global system where the richest fifth consume 45% of all meat and fish, 58% of all energy used and 84% of all paper, has 74% of all telephone lines and owns 87% of all vehicles.
Globalisation has battered down international borders to the point of transnational companies exisiting beyond the scope of any one government.
Almost half of the world's six billion people now live on less than $2 a day, while 1.2 billion people live on less than $1 a day

Australia: the facts

Some random tidbits i found amusing.

* Mass moonings - In 1832, 300 female Convicts at the Cascade Female Factory mooned the Governor of Tasmania during a chapel service. It was said that in a "rare moment of collusion with the Convict women, the ladies in the Governor's party could not control their laughter

Post Autistic Economics

"Modern economics is sick. Economics has increasingly become an intellectual game played for its own sake and not for its practical consequences for understanding the economic world. Economists have converted the subject into a sort of social mathematics in which analytical rigour is everything and practical relevance is nothing.” -Mark Blaug
PAE has challenged standard neoclassical assumptions and incorporated ideas from sociology and psychology into economic analysis. Specifically, the notions of utility theory, (consumer choice), production and efficiency theory (pareto optimality) as well as game theory have been criticised: one much discussed article read Is There Anything Worth Keeping in Standard Microeconomics?.

Why do we waste time fighting each other?

At every level of human conflict, whether it be two people racing for the same cab or whether it be an oil rich country being blown to pieces by a country that requires aa shit load of oil, the human drama element is always based on some predisposed prejudice regarding a small, usually irrelevant, part of the issue being discussed.

The fact is that the vast majority of people are absolutely impervious to facts. Test the average man by asking him to listen to a simple sentence which contains one word with associations to excite his prejudices, fears or passions -- he will fail to understand what you have said and reply by expressing his emotional reaction to the critical word. It was long before I understood this fact of psychology. Even to this day, it surprises me that there should be minds which are unable to accept any impression equably and critically.
